At the siding opposite to Clough Mills, coal was unloaded for use in the mills, a chute being provided to enable coal to be dropped down to road level. Crushed stone for road making was also similarly unloaded here into carts that were waiting below.
Barren Clough Wharf was used for general goods from the area around Peak Forest, Sparropit and Tideswell. Provisions and animal foodstuffs, coal, farming implements and mining equipment were brought up from Bugsworth Basin and descending traffic consisted of lead ore, pigs of lead and other minerals from mines in the Peak Forest and Sparrowpit area.
