Denton Recipients of the 1914 Star (Mons Star)
This bronze campaign medal was authorised by King George V in April 1917 for those who had served in France or Belgium between the 5 August 1914 and midnight on 22 Nov 1914 inclusive. The award was open to officers and men of the British and Indian Expeditionary Forces, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Royal Navy Reserve and Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, as well as doctors and nurses, who served ashore in France or Belgium.
A bronze bar clasp inscribed '5 Aug. to 22 Nov. 1914' was awarded to all those who qualified for the 1914 Star and who served under fire. Since the same ribbon was used with the 1914-15 Star, holders of the 1914 Star were permitted to wear a small silver heraldic rosette on their ribbon when the decoration itself was not worn. It was necessary to apply for the issue of the clasp. On the Medal Rolls Index Cards this is usually noted as the 'Clasp and Roses' or 'C&R'.
Recipients of the 1914 Star supported the French army in holding back the German army while new recruits could be trained and equipped in the United Kingdom. Together, they merit considerable honour for their part in the first sixteen weeks of the Great War. This period included the battle of Mons, the retreat to the Seine, the battles of Le Cateau, the Marne, the Aisne and the first battle of Ypres. About 378,000 1914 Stars were issued.
