Coal mining was a dangerous occupation and this page records the names of some of the miners who lost their lives in the course of their work at Bradford, Clayton and Moston Collieries, Manchester.
The men listed were all coal miners, that is, hewers of coal unless stated otherwise, and this selection is representative of a larger number.
- Bradford Colliery
- 6 May 1856: Daniel SIDDALL, 30 years. Strangled by the cage chain twisting round his neck on landing at the bottom of the pit.
- 2 Sep 1856: Seth FLITCROFT, 22 years. Stone falling out of a hopper on being landed.
- 6 Dec 1856: John WHITEHEAD, 15 years. Explosion of firedamp on the 17 Nov 1856.
- 18 Sep 1857: Henry APPLETON, 16 years. Collapse of brickwork.
- 18 Sep 1857: James BLEAZE, 19 years. Collapse of brickwork.
- 18 Sep 1857: John CLAYBURN, 20 years. Collapse of brickwork.
- 17 Dec 1860: John GOUGH, 63 years. Fatally injured by roof fall on the 12 Dec 1860.
- 23 Apr 1863: James BATES, 32 years. Roof fall.
- 14 Nov 1864: Benjamin Buckley CALOW, 26 years. Boiler maker. Fell down mine shaft and was killed instantly.
- 19 Aug 1865: James STOTT, 40 years. Fell while going down the steps from a pit hill.
- 19 Sep 1865: William KNIVETON, 33 years. Fatally injured by a fall of stone on the 9 Sep 1865.
- 15 Jan 1867: Richard HUGHES, 13 years. Head crushed between the roof and an empty coal tub when it started moving up the jig brow.
- 9 Apr 1868: James STAFFORD, 13 years. Roof fall on waggon road.
- 11 Aug 1871: Thomas LEE, 36 years. Dayman. Struck by a stone.
- 29 Nov 1871: John MASSEY, 16 years. Waggoner. Struck down by a tub.
- 29 Jul 1872: John JACKSON, 16 years. Horse driver. Runover by his tubs.
- 19 Nov 1872: George WALKER, 15 years. Point changer. Crushed by a train of 18 tubs.
- 20 Jan 1873: William STOREY, 22 years. Brow repairer. Fell down steps.
- 22 May 1874: Edward BRYAN, 51 years. Burned by firedamp.
- 21 Jan 1875: Thomas ISHERWOOD, 33 years. Fatally injured on the 11 Jan 1875 when he was caught against a coupling while riding up engine brow.
- 6 Sep 1875: Edward STANFIELD, 28 years. Fatally injured on the 3 Sep 1875 by a roof fall in old workings where he was getting stone to build a pack wall.
- 27 Mar 1876: James WHITEHEAD, 48 years. Daywageman. Died while quietly seated on the surface in good air.
- 14 Jan 1878: Stephen AMOS, 35 years. Drowned due to flooding of underground workings.
- 14 Jan 1878: Joseph HALL, 19 years. Filler. Drowned due to flooding of underground workings.
- 2 Feb 1882: John ROBERTS, 61 years. Caught between a coal tub and the roof.
- 5 Jan 1886: Henry GOUGH, 53 years. Piece of bin (waste) broke his leg and died on the 31 Jan 1886.
- 6 Jul 1886: James HOWARTH, 40 years. Browman. Fatally injured on the 30 Jun 1886 by tubs on the engine brow.
- 30 Apr 1890: James PUGH, 32 years. Fatally injured by a roof fall in the Parker Mine and died the same day in Manchester Royal Infirmary.
- 20 Aug 1897: James KNIGHT, 34 years. Roof fall from a slip known to be present.
- 25 Jul 1898: Joseph JACKSON, 15 years. Horse driver. While driving a horse hauling full tubs along a level he went missing. After a search he was found under the first tub and he appeared to have fallen off it.
- 12 Oct 1899: Ernest PEARSON, 29 years. Roof fall.
- 3 Oct 1900: William ACKERS, 14 years, Waggoner. Crushed by a tub in the Parker Mine.
- 5 Mar 1901: James Henry HORNE, 19 years, Roof fall in Parker Mine.
- 19 Dec 1901: James HIGGINS, 54 years. Roof fall in Parker Mine.
- 22 Mar 1905: John William BIRCH, 30 years. Fatally injured on the 14 Mar 1905 by a roof fall in the Parker Mine.
- 13 Jul 1906: Herbert Norris PAUL, 22 years. Waggoner. Fall due to assuming cage was in position.
- 6 Feb 1907: William LEACH, 55 years. Dataller. Struck by tubs.
- 2 Sep 1907: William JOHNSON, 29 years. Assistant Hooker-on. Fell out of cage 40 yards from bottom of Parker Shaft.
- 16 Aug 1907: John Joseph SEDDON, 31 years. Fatally injured by ignition of firedamp on 8 Aug 1907.
- 22 Aug 1908: Peter NOBLETT, 72 years. Fireman. Fatally injured on 13 Aug by shot firing accident.
- 3 Jul 1909: Samuel WALSH, 51 years. Roof fall.
- 7 Feb 1910: Walter WHITEHEAD, 40 years. Fireman. Thrown from a runaway tub.
- 19 Oct 1910: Thomas MERRICK, 21 years. Jigger. Electocuted.
- 3 Mar 1911: Bertie SHAKESPEARE, 14 years. Breaker boy (breaks coal into pieces and removes impurities). Struck by overrun of full tubs.
- 19 Apr 1912: Frederick John OLIVER, 55 years. While pulling coal with a crowbar, the roof came down with the coal, displacing two props.
- 9 Apr 1914: Thomas JONES, 53 years. Crushed by a tub.
- 3 Dec 1920: Richard CLARK, 49 years. Dataller. Roof fall.
- 15 Nov 1924: William STOPFORD, 56 years. Crushed between tubs.
- 9 Dec 1924: William ASHTON, 36 years. Roof fall while riding outbye (towards pit shaft).
- 9 Dec 1924: Robert Edward GOODLOCK, 17 years. Pony driver. Roof fall while riding outbye (towards pit shaft).
- 9 Dec 1924: George ROADY, 62 years. Roof fall while riding outbye (towards pit shaft).
- 28 May 1928: Noah EASTHOPE, 42 years. Surface labourer. Burned on back of hand and died of natural causes on 25 Jul 1928.
- 1932: James CHADWICK, 48 years. Fall of stone.
- 3 Feb 1933: John YATES, 46 years. Stone fall.
- 9 Aug 1937: Thomas YARWOOD, 61 years. Coal fall.
- 1948: James DOOHAN, 33 years. Fell down mine shaft.
- Clayton Colliery
- 1853: Richard JOHNSON, 50 years. Roof fall.
- 20 Mar 1856: James OPENSHAW, 11 years. Roof fall.
- 5 Apr 1856: William BAYLEY, 44 years. Fatally injured on the 2 Apr 1856 by an explosion of firedamp. Another miner was burned.
- 23 Nov 1863: Richard BENTLEY, 14 years. Waggoner. Roof fall in the level that was being repaired.
- 15 Oct 1864: James ENTWISTLE, 46 years. Roof fall in Four-foot Mine.
- 15 Oct 1864: John JOHNSON, 35 years, Roof fall in Four-foot Mine.
- 8 Sep 1865: Charles SHAWCROSS, 16 years. Fired a can with 4 pounds of powder in it.
- 20 Aug 1866: Thomas JOHNSON, 40 years. Fatally injured on the 14 Aug 1866 by an explosion of firedamp.
- 17 Dec 1868: James LOVATT, 30 years. Roof fall as he was taking a piece of coal out of the side.
- 14 Jul 1872: Meshach KENYON, 45 years. Explosion of firedamp in Two-foot Mine. A flash in the upper end of the face work which he entered with a candle without trying with the safety lamp.
The fireman had neglected to examine the far end for which he was prosecuted and fined.
- 12 Sep 1873: Thomas STAFFORD, 60 years. Engineman. Knocked from scaffold in the pumping shaft by the capstan rope breaking as he was working at the pumps.
- Moston Colliery
- 3 Jun 1856: Thomas RAMSBOTTOM, 29 years. Fell out of a tub.
- 1 Dec 1856: John WROE, 23 years. Explosion of firedamp.
- 17 Jun 1863: Michael John CRUTTIE, 40 years. Sinker. Breakage of capstan rope.
- 7 Oct 1867: Charles BRADBURY, 14 years. Waggoner. Coal fall.
- 27 Mar 1872: William WARREN, 31 years. Stone fall.
- 19 Apr 1874: Walter SMETHURST, 37 years. Dayman. Struck on head by a water tank in the shaft.
- 1 Dec 1875: William MITCHELL, 51 years. Dayman. Suffocated by blackdamp.
- 29 Mar 1893: Patrick DELAHUNTY, 59 years. Laboure. Knocked down by tubs being shunted.
- 7 Apr 1893: Rylance RICHARDSON, 48 years. Dataller. Struck by a prop knocked over by a tub.
- 2 Apr 1897: John Robert HAGUE, 42 years. Drawer. Crushed by tubs.
- 16 Mar 1899: Robert COLEMAN, 32 years. Fireman. Roof fall.
- 23 Mar 1910: Robert FISHER, 34 years. Haulage hand. Crushed by a falling stone.
- 13 Oct 1910: John HERON, 21 years. Pony Driver. Crushed by tubs.
- 3 Jan 1912: Joseph CLAYTON, 49 years. Coal fall from face.
- 1 Jun 1916: Charles LAYCOCK, 42 years. Dayman. Head fracture caused when he fell over.
- 13 Jul 1916: Ronald RIDGWAY, 15 years. Driver. Crushed between tubs and side.
