Bradford & Clayton Collieries, Manchester
In Memoriam & Mining Injuries
Coal mining was a dangerous occupation and this page records the names of some of the miners who either lost their lives or were injured in the course of their work at Bradford and Clayton Collieries, Manchester.
Clayton Colliery was subsequently subsumed by Bradford Colliery.
The men listed were all coal miners, that is, hewers of coal unless stated otherwise, and this selection is representative of a larger number.
- In Memoriam, Bradford Colliery
- 6 May 1856: Daniel SIDDALL, aged 30 years. Strangled by the cage chain twisting round his neck on landing at the bottom of the pit.

- 2 September 1856: Seth FLITCROFT, aged 22 years. Stone falling out of a hopper on being landed.

- 14 November 1864: Benjamin Buckley CALOW, aged 26 years, a boiler maker by occupation. Fell down mine shaft and was killed instantly.

- 19 August 1865: James STOTT, aged 40 years. Falling while going down the steps from a pit hill.

- 9 September 1865: William KNIVETON, aged 33 years. Fatally injured by a fall of stone and died on the 19 September 1865.

- 15 January 1867: Richard HUGHES, aged 13 years. Boy. Head crushed between the roof and an empty coal tub when it started moving up the jig brow.

- 1874: Edward BRYAN, aged 51 years. Killed by an explosion of fire damp.

- 21 January 1875: Thomas ISHERWOOD, aged 33 years. Fatally injured on the 11 January 1875 when he was caught against a coupling while riding up engine brow.

- 6 September 1875: Edward STANFIELD, aged 28 years, of Peter Street, Openshaw. Fatally injured on the 3 September 1875 by a roof fall in old workings where he was getting stone to build a pack wall.

- 14 January 1878: Stephen AMOS, aged 35 years. Drowned due to flooding of underground workings.

- 14 January 1878: Joseph HALL, aged 19 years. Filler. Drowned due to flooding of underground workings.

- 2 February 1882: John ROBERTS, aged 61 years. Caught between a coal tub and the roof.

- 30 April 1890: James PUGH, aged 32 years. While working in the Parker Mine he was fatally injured in a roof fall and died the same day in Manchester Royal Infirmary.

- 20 August 1897: James KNIGHT, aged 34 years. Roof fall in his working place from a slip known to be present.

- 25 July 1898: Joseph JACKSON, aged 15 years. Horse Driver. While driving a horse hauling full tubs along a level he went missing. After a search he was found under the first tub and he appeared to have
fallen off it.

- 3 July 1909: Samuel WALSH, aged 51 years, of Holt Street, Bradford. Died of injuries received in a roof fall.

- 19 April 1912: Frederick John OLIVER, aged 55 years of Milton Street, Bradford. While pulling coal with a crowbar, the roof came down with the coal, displacing two props.

- 3 December 1920: Richard CLARK, aged 49 years. Dataller. Crushed by roof fall.

- 28 May 1928: Noah EASTHOPE, aged 42 years. Surface Labourer. Burned on back of hand and died on 25 July 1928.

- 1933: Ernest PADLEY, aged 17 years, of South Street, Longsight. Killed at bottom of mine shaft.

- 1948: James DOOHAN, aged 33 years, of Waterloo Road, Stockport. Fell down mine shaft and was killed instantly.

- Mining Injuries, Bradford Colliery
- 12 December 1879: Alfred SOUTHWORTH, aged 14 years. Pony Driver. While working in the Four Feet Mine he fell off a coal tub and broke his thigh.
- 21 April 1884: Peter DOOTSON, aged 37 years. Metalman. Injured when a bobbin cartridge exploded after being put into the hole.
- 27 November 1891: Richard POMFRETT, aged 15 years. Pony Driver. Broken thigh and cut head caused by a coal tub he failed to unhook from the pony.
- 11 June 1912: George NOBLETT, aged 23 years, of Grange Street, Bradford, was admitted to Ancoats Hospital after being injured.
- 9 January 1913: James JOHNSON, aged 14 years, of Cross Street, Bradford, was seriously injured.
- 18 May 1914: Joseph HEALEY of Lowe Street, Miles Platting, was admitted to Ancoats Hospital after receiving severe leg injuries caused by a roof fall.
- 17 August 1914: Albert MITCHELL, aged 22 years. Filler. Crushed by a coal tub in a dirt hole. The chain broke and tubs ran down and struck him.
- 8 February 1922: Samuel CHEETHAM, aged 42 years, of Hooley Hill, Audenshaw, was admitted to Ancoats Hospital after being injured by a roof fall.
- 10 September 1925: George EMMERSON, aged 36 years. Fractured a leg due to a roof fall.
- 25 January 1926: Thomas HORNER, aged 42 years. The cage jumped at the bottom of the shaft and fractured a leg.
- 27 August 1926: Arthur QUAYLE, aged 31 years. Coal Tub Repairer. Fell with scaffold and fractured an arm and leg.
- 15 December 1926: Arthur DENNON, aged 35 years. Filler. Roof fall fractured a leg.
- 30 November 1928: Stanley GILES, aged 18 years. Pony Driver. Fractured a leg when he was run over by full coal tubs.
- 5 March 1929: Charles DENNETT of Minerva Road, Ashton-under-Lyne, was injured when he was buried by a roof fall.
- 27 January 1930: Thomas DAVIS, aged 26 years, was admitted to Ancoats Hospital after being injured.

- 1853: Richard JOHNSON, aged 50 years. Roof fall.

- 8 September 1865: Charles SHAWCROSS, aged 16 years. Described as a boy. Fired a can with 4 pounds of powder in it.

- 20 August 1866: Thomas JOHNSON, aged 40 years. Fatally injured on the 14 August 1866 by an explosion of firedamp.

- 17 December 1868: James LOVATT, aged 30 years. Roof fall as he was taking a piece of coal out of the side.

- 14 July 1872: Meshach KENYON, aged 45 years. Explosion of firedamp in 2-foot mine. A flash in the upper end of the face work which he entered with a candle without trying with the safety lamp.
The fireman had neglected to examine the far end for which he was prosecuted and fined.

- 12 September 1873: Thomas STAFFORD, aged 60 years. Engineman. Knocked from scaffold in the pumping shaft by the capstan rope breaking as he was working at the pumps.
