Sycamore Inn

off Tib St, Stockport Rd
This inn stood at the back of St Lawrence's cricket ground between Tib St and Whittles Farm.

It is not known when the Sycamore Inn was first licensed as a beer house but Slater’s Directory for 1869 records that Sarah Lees was then the licensee. In 1874 James Lees became the licensee and he was followed by Mrs Mary Lees in 1878. The Lees family owned a brewery on Town Ln.

The 1881 census records that Robert Saxton was then the beer house keeper at the Sycamore Inn. Also resident were his wife Mary, his stepson George Lees, a brick setter, and the family servant Harriet Jackson. Following the death of Robert Saxton the licence briefly passed to his wife before passing to William Lees. In Jul 1902 the wife of William Lees became the licensee.

Meanwhile the Sycamore Inn became a tied house of the brewers Bell & Co Ltd of Hempshaw Ln, Stockport. On the 28 Jan 1903 Thomas Moores became the last landlord and the inn closed on the 14 Feb 1912. Thomas Moores married his first wife, Ann Roper at St Stephen’s Church, Audenshaw, in 1877. The couple had three children, James (b.1884), Sarah Elizabeth (b.1888) and Samuel (b.1890). Ann died at Denton in 1891, aged 35 years. Thomas Moores married his second wife, Hannah Firth, at All Saints, Marple, in 1894. The 1911 census records that the couple were then the sole occupiers of the Sycamore Inn.
