The Old Soldier (Th'owd Squaddie)

The Old Soldier public house was built in 1940 on the site of the bowling green of the original public house that dated from the late 18th century. It was demolished in c.1983 to make way for a slip road of the M67 motorway.

This view shows the original Old Soldier, shortly before demolition. Its replacement is being built on the bowling green in the background. Wilton St is on the right. The actual 'old soldier' is believed to be William Blomiley who was a yeoman in the local militia in the mid-18th century. In 1785 his name appeared in the Alehouse Recognizances as surety for a Johnathan Bowker.
