Moorfield Mill

Two Trees Ln, Haughton Green
William Sidebotham built this cotton-spinning mill on the south side of Two Trees Ln in 1826 and by 1836 it was being operated by Messrs Taylor and Rockcliffe. In the 1860s, Messrs Taylor Brothers were operating the mill and by the turn of the 20th century the business was known as Samuel Taylor & Co. Occasionally, it was also referred to as Taylor's Mill.

Worrall’s Cotton Spinners Directory for 1891 lists Samuel Taylor & Co as occupying Moorfield Mill in Haughton near Denton (on Two Trees Ln). At this time the company was operating 28,770 spindles, 1,800 ring spindles and 328/448 twists where two or more yarns were twisted together.

Eventually, cotton spinning ceased and Celesco Ltd acquired the mill. They were manufacturers of knitted fabrics. They moved out in 1951/52 to be replaced by Thomas Wall & Son Ltd (T Wall and Son (Meats) Ltd/T Wall and Son (Ice Cream) Ltd). The Wall's business had become part of Unilever in 1922.

The mill was demolished in 1963 and the entrance to Mancunian Rd lies approximately between the east end of the mill and the residence of the mill manager.

The house in the foreground was the residence of the mill manager. At the other end of the mill there were two rows of terraced cottages for mill workers and opposite the mill there were more cottages and a shop in Taylor's Square.
