Hulton Street

Denton
Hulton St, off Manchester Rd, is about 33-yards long and it was originally connected with Prestwich St, off Wilton St, via a 110-yard long public footpath through allotment gardens. The Scott family owned the land and the footpath was closed once a year on Christmas Day. Hulton St was named after the Hulton family who were landowners and coal mine proprietors in Denton and Haughton in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The family seat of the Hulton family was at Hulton Park, a large estate at Over Hulton about 3 miles south west of Bolton.

Slater's Trade Directory for 1911 records that John B Catlow, a joiner and builder, had premises on Hulton St. The same directory records that the premises on the right-hand corner with Manchester Rd were occupied by Mrs Mary Cook, a dressmaker, and on the left-hand corner by James Bromley, a shopkeeper.

The prominent building in the background is Russell Scott Memorial Schools on Prestwich St. Opposite to it, on the right, are the People's Hall and the hat factory of Wilde & Booth, both barely visible.
Every building in this view, with the exception of the shop on the right-hand corner with Manchester Rd, was later demolished.
