Howard Lane

Denton and Haughton
Howard Ln, originally known as Howard's Ln, was of ancient origin and it was situated on the east side of Ashton Rd (Long Ln) between Peacock St and Lake Rd. It formed the boundary between Denton and Haughton, the south side being in Denton and the north side in Haughton. It connected Ashton Rd to Edward St and High St.

Slater's Trade Directory for 1903 records two hat manufactories on the north (Haughton) side of the lane, these being T & W Walker, and Radcliffe & Ogden Ltd. The 1902 list of British hat manufacturers shows that both companies made wool felt hats.

Access to Howard Ln from Ashton Rd was destroyed when the M67 motorway was constructed but its surviving part can still be accessed from Edward St. High St was also destroyed by the motorway.

This view of Howard Ln is from Ashton Rd and the houses on both Ashton Rd and Howard Ln were formerly in Haughton.

The large advertising board, just visible on the right, is in Denton and it is advertising the Stamford Cinema on Denton Rd, Audenshaw.

The offices of hat manufacturers Walker, Ashworth & Linney Ltd on Ashton Rd can be seen in the background on Ashton Rd. The cottages on the right were formerly in Haughton.

This view is looking along Howard Ln towards Ashton Rd from its junction with Edward St, which is off the picture to the left in front of the railings.

Behind the four houses on the right there was a croft known as Petty Common because there was a row of outside privies some distance behind the houses.

The industrial buildings on the left are part of Oldham & Son Ltd and High St is behind the viewpoint.
