Electric House was situated on the corner of Annan St and the proprietor was Percy Leonard Barr. He was born at Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire, on the 28 Dec 1907 and he married Edith Hinds at Wilton St Unitarian Chapel in 1931. His wife was born on the 15 Nov 1905 at Stockport. In 1939 the couple were resident on Melton Ave, off Granada Rd.

By 1934 Percy Barr was in business as an electrical engineer with premises on Walker St and shortly after the end of World War II in 1945 he had a shop, called Electric House, built Ashton Rd. This shop sold a range of electrical household goods and his wife worked there taking a particular interest in radios. In addition, the company specialised in electrical plant, power and lighting installations and for this purpose it required a works. By 1950 this was located on the Acre St corner of Town Ln and later it moved to Law St, which was also the Registered Office of the company.

A breakthrough in the progress of the company came in the late 1930s when it was awarded a contract for electrical maintenance at English Steel Corporation Ltd, North Street Works, Openshaw. This street is now called Parkhouse St.

On the 1 Sep 1959 the company went into voluntary liquidation and the Chartered Accountant John Norman Struthers of Manchester was appointed as the Liquidator. He died and was succeeded by Arthur James Burden who was appointed on the 12 Feb 1962. The company was finally wound up at a meeting held on Manchester Rd, Denton, on the 6 Mar 1963.

By 1959 Electric House was occupied by the Denton & Haughton Co-op, initially for the sale of drapery and ladies wear. Later this was extended for the sale of boots and shoes. Their main shop was on the opposite side of Annan St next to the Silver Springs Public House. Following it closure by the Co-op the former Electric House was demolished and a branch of the Trustee Savings Bank was built on the footprint of the former building. Later this became a branch of the TSB Bank plc.
