Church & Warburton's Farms

Church Farm, near St Mary's Church, Haughton Green
The man on the left in the photograph is believed to be Tom Stenton (b.1889) who died in the Great War on the 6 Nov 1917, aged 28 years. At the time of his death, he was serving as 141116 Gunner Stenton with the Royal Garrison Artillery, 233rd Siege Battery. He was the son of Samuel Stenton and Susan Clayton and the husband of Mabel Adeline Almond of Meadow Ln, Haughton Green. The couple married in 1916. His memorial is at Mont Huon Cemetery, Le Treport, France (Grave Ref: V.B.4A) and he is also commemorated on the war memorial at St Mary's Church.

The 1901 census records that he was then living with his parents, two brothers and two sisters at 30 Haughton Dale (near the lodge of the wireworks), where his father was employed as a carter on a farm.

Warburton's Farm, Haughton Green Rd, Haughton Green
This farm was situated on the south side of Haughton Green Rd between Gibraltar Ln and Brown Square and it was adjoined by the store of the Haughton Green Equitable Society Ltd.

From sometime in the 1860s until 1891 the farmer was William Woolley who also ran a drapery and grocer's shop. Between 1896 and 1906 the farmer was Charles Warburton (born in 1838 at Torkington, Cheshire) who was succeeded by his son, James Warburton (born in 1879/80 at Woodley, Cheshire).

The farm was demolished in 1964 and the entrance to Rivermead Rd now stands on the site.
