Burgons' & Shepley's Shops

Burgons Ltd, 14 & 16 Manchester Rd, Denton
Burgons Ltd was a chain of grocers in the Manchester area, established in 1847. Slater's Trade Directory for 1909 records that they were occupying premises at 14 & 16 Manchester Rd.

Slater's Directory for 1911 lists outlets at: Heaton Moor Rd, Heaton Moor; Crofts Bank Rd, Urmston; Grove St, Wilmslow; Railway St, Altrincham; Washway Rd, Sale; Wilmslow Rd, Cheadle; Manchester Rd, Denton and Monton Rd, Eccles. Additionally, there was a Burgons Hall in Eccles and Burgons Italian Warehousemen in Cheadle.

Although the company was established in 1847 it was not until 1898 that it was incorporated (Company No. 58137) and it was dissolved in 1976.

Shepley’s Shop, Heaton St, Denton
This confectioner’s shop was situated on the north side of Heaton St, between Grey St and Oldham St. Heaton St is off the south side of Manchester Rd and parallel with it.

In 1911 the widowed Abigail Shepley née Derbyshire was resident at her shop with her son, James Arthur (18), and she was occupied as a confectioner and dealer.

Abigail Derbyshire was born at Bollington, Cheshire, in 1856 to William Derbyshire and Mary Maurice who were married at St Peter’s Church, Prestbury, Cheshire, in 1842. She married James Shepley at Stockport in 1890 and her husband died at Denton in 1901, aged 41 years. Abigail died at Ashton-under-Lyne in 1938, aged 82 years.
