Broome & Clarke's Shops

Broome's Shop, Hyde Rd, Denton
This shop was situated at 10 Hyde Rd, Denton, close to Crown Point. The 1901 census records that the premises were occupied by Israel Broome (aka Broom) who was born at Hazel Grove (formerly Bullock Smithy), Cheshire, in 1855.

At the time of the 1901 census, Israel was a Fish Dealer and by 1914, the premises had been converted into a greengrocer's shop.

Israel married Elizabeth Ann Turner at St Mary's Church, Stockport in 1874. Elizabeth Ann was born at Stockport in 1856. Israel died at Denton in 1925, aged 70 years, and Elizabeth Ann died at Audenshaw in 1938, aged 82 years.

Clarke's Shop, Hyde Rd, Denton
This business of family grocers was established in 1888 and by 1911 James Clarke was the proprietor. James married Mary Janion at St Michael's Church, Mottram in Longdendale, in 1880. The couple had seven children, Emma (b.1881), Eliza (b.1883), Ernest (b.1884), Mary (b.1887), Lilian (b.1889), James (b.1890) and Sophia (b.1891).

Mary died in 1925, aged 71 years, and James died on the 9 February 1939, aged 77 years.
