Great Wood Pit Sough was constructed to drain water from the mine workings of Denton Colliery into the river Tame adjacent to Hulme's Pit. Sometime between 1909 and 1922 Great Wood Pit became a pumping station in a similar manner to Hulme's Pit and construction of the sough would be contemporary with this. Whether Great Wood Pit was henceforth used solely for pumping purposes or it was also used for mining coal as well is unknown.
